A traditional wooden ski is the best field ski/forest ski. It is the best compromise for use in forest terrain. Well-tarred birch soles mean you never have to worry about slipping and sticking from -1 C and colder. You will have grip and glide in both untracked terrain and tracked tracks of skis or scooters. This means that your skis are ready for action in your location, etc., all the time.
Of course steel edged skis are better in mountain terrain with hard packed snow. But you won’t be able to ride or pull sledges in tracked or untracked forest terrain without trail skins. You can do that with wooden skis.
Many claim that it is too difficult with wooden skis around zero and a few plus degrees. It can be remedied with a little effort. You will have the same problem with plastic skis equipped with skins. The skins will clog with snow that builds up under the skis. The worst thing, however, is that breaking trails with skins do not grip particularly well on untracked terrain in the snow.
The wooden ski gives you the opportunity to ski, not walk with the skinned skis, as it often happens with spurs on the skis. The forest ski in loose snow conditions, is superior to a plastic ski.
Long skis give better bearing in loose snow, but then combat movement (fire & movment) methods are considerably more difficult, if not impossible to impossible. So we recommend 210 – 220 cm long skis, max 230 cm.
