The grain composition makes the stone both durable and tough. Unlike natural stone, a ceramic whetstone can be obtained with a more precise grain size.

The shape of the stone is round and flat with chamfered edges to give a rounded transition. The fine side makes up 2/3 of the thickness, as that side is usually used and wears the most. The stone is normally used with water, but can be used dry. The whetstone has a protective rubber shell.
